Nicholas Payton SeXXXtet

Nick Payton in New York, from my assignment there with Cicily Janus. Cicily’s doing Nick’s liner notes for his upcoming album “Bitches” and it looks as if it’s going to be awesome for music lovers, but isn’t going to please Jazz traditionalists. Bring it on!

Concert shoes

As of last year, one of my favorite things to photograph at concerts is the footwear of band members, rather than the players themselves. You’d be surprised – many wear converse, steel-toed boots and hip leather boots while a few go completely barefoot.

You should be somewhere outside

Singer Songwriter Sarah Renfro has released a new EP of dark indie folk tunes. I had a chance to hear most of the tunes in advance, but her final mix of “Edge of the Night” brought a bittersweet ending to the EP. The kind that makes you want to strut over to Brooklyn and ask Sarah when the next one’s coming out. My guess is it’ll be a while, unless Sarah can clone herself the way she does with her multiple voices on the album ;-)

creativeLIVE, democratizing creative education

Yesterday (well, 1:30am for me) Chase Jarvis introduced a new way to democratize creativity and education through creativeLIVE – with a revamp to the 1-year old site and big endorsement from Chase, aspiring artists will be able to view some of the top professionals in their field give lessons, broadcast for free. It’s quite an interesting business model. For more info, check out the video below:

Gigging in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

I just returned from playing a music gig (on trumpet) in Kuala Lumpur for Malaysian Royalty. It was a heap of fun! The schedule was basically eat, nap, eat, nap, eat sleep, rehearsal, eat, nap, gig, eat, sleep, eat, run up the tower and come back to Hong Kong. Very fun, and very yummy. I shot these images in between sets at the Shangri-la hotel.

This second shot is of Niño on saxophone
