Life is short. Go camping.

Life is short, so I went camping at Sai Kung’s Big Wave Bay. Easter weekend well spent! If you’re ever on the fence about doing something potentially awesome, just reread this post and say “Yes, I’ll do it!”
A good friend of mine is traveling the world right now – starting in Portland, last stop Hong Kong. She’s going to get a high five and a big hug when she arrives. You don’t need to travel the world or climb the highest mountain (sometimes it’s expensive!), the point is that every day is special and when you do something with your days,  your life becomes special.

(And if you go camping at the beach, wander in the water in the dark and watch the bioluminescence go in and out of the waves and between your toes)

Jun Kung collabs with NYC’s Teriver Cheung

Backstage Live a few weeks ago saw a unique collaboration for Hong Kong: Jun Kung played a gig to a packed house with (former Honkie) Teriver Cheung, a guitarist now based in New York. Supporting the night were Japanese Yuka Tadano on bass and Dominican Chris Polanco on congas and piano. You should have seen Chris play both instruments at the same time! The night was very well-received and Nirvana’s “Smells like Teen spirit” was played early on and again used as an encore. At one point, Jun Kung spoke of the improvisational nature of Jazz and for the first time in HK I saw a group of musicians improvise a completely new tune. I recorded it on my phone, I was so excited. Hopefully this sets a new precedent for creative collaboration here in Hong Kong. Thank you Jun Kung.

If someone can identify the rapper, add his name in the comments! Thanks.

Straightforward mugshot #2

From the previous series with Abel, I give you DJ G.

Some things stay in your mind longer than others and Forrest Gump talking about shoes people wear makes me look at what you can tell about a person from their shoes. That’s very fascinating when applied to photography:

Fancl is freaky

Fancl is a cosmetics company, infamous for their pursuit of perfection in skin whitening creams (read: bleach) and their stores and ads scare me as much as a horror film. Check out these two videos for an interesting perspective on a possible dystopic cosmetic future.

Fancl “Forever Young” ad (kinda sounds like being a zombie)

Umbrella Corporation Regenerate Cream (trailer for Resident Evil – eeek! Zombies!!!):

Straightfoward mugshot

Some of the best portraits are the straightforward, expressionless ones shot with little direction. There’s something original that doesn’t get taken away with extensive posing. Here’s a deep look at Abel.

What to cook and how to cook it

A new book today jumped onto my wishlist – more like my “I’m going to pick up a copy tomorrow” list. What to cook and how to cook it is a beginner’s book for cooking from scratch. I not only salivated over the beautiful photography by Angela Moore but marveled at the simplicity of how the images and words made a recipe come to life in such a simple way. A simple way that my brain understands such that I will actually cook yummy stuff. The video below will introduce to the book. Also check out this very cool peek into the book by the publisher Phaidon.
